Dimorphism Fish Freshwater Sexual

December 13, A new species of freshwater fish in the family Characidae, called Hyphessobrycon myrmex, exhibits an intriguing sexual dichromatism: Adult males are a deep reddish-orange, while females and juveniles are pale yellow. The species has been described in an article published in the Journal of Fish Biology. The specimens described in the study were collected between and during the expeditions that sought to produce an inventory of the Characiform fish fauna Teleostei, Ostariophysi from South America.

Frontiers | Stat5b Regulates Sexually Dimorphic Gene Expression in Zebrafish Liver | Physiology

Sexual size dimorphism is an interesting phenomenon occurred in many fish species. Wildtype zebrafish exhibits a significant sexual dimorphism in body size at the adult stage. Previous studies indicated that sexual size dimorphism was eliminated in stat5b -mutated zebrafish. Herein, the comparative transcriptome analysis was conducted to observe the genes and pathways involved in sexual size dimorphism. The number of male-biased and female-biased genes was much less in the liver of stat5b mutant zebrafish than in wildtype. Gene ontology GO enrichment and Kyoto encyclopedia of genes and genomes KEGG pathway analysis indicated that multiple pathways related to metabolism were affected upon loss of stat5b function. Furthermore, the weighted correlation network analysis WGCNA detected many candidate genes related to the growth traits and stat5b function, such as greb1 , lepr, and igf2b.

Sexual dimorphism

Evolutionary ecology of neotropical freshwater fishes pp Cite as. In poeciliid fishes, sexual dichromism is associated with larger size and larger broods, but there is no relationship between sexual size dimorphism and sexual dichromism, or between degree of dichromism and color pattern polymorphism. Factors are discussed which influence the evolution of color pattern polymorphisms, sexual dimorphism and dichromism.
Sexual dimorphism is the condition where the two sexes of the same species exhibit different characteristics beyond the differences in their sexual organs. The condition occurs in many animals and some plants. Differences may include secondary sex characteristics , size, weight, color, markings, and may also include behavioral and cognitive differences. These differences may be subtle or exaggerated, and may be subjected to sexual selection. The opposite of dimorphism is monomorphism.
